“I did a fair amount of reading, and I had friends who were very interested in history and philosophy. That’s really how I got my education, not from school. I liked to read when I was on the ship. It was a wonderful thing. You’re on a ship, and time does not ever push you. You just sit down and read a book. And when you’re read the book you read the ads. Then you put it aside and pick up another book.”
